Frequently asked questions

How strong is the PDF password protection?
Modern PDF protection uses 256-bit AES encryption, which is very strong. The practical security depends on password strength. A short password can be cracked quickly. A long random password provides real security.
Can the password be recovered if I forget it?
No. Without the correct password, the PDF cannot be opened or unlocked. Keep a secure record of passwords you apply to documents.
Should I send the password in the same email as the PDF?
No. Send the password through a separate channel, a text message, phone call, or different messaging app. Sending both in the same email means that if someone intercepts the email, they have everything they need.
Does password protection prevent printing?
An open password prevents all access without the password. If you want to allow viewing but prevent printing or copying, use a permissions password instead. Both can be applied together.
Is the original PDF changed?
No. You receive a new protected copy. The original file is unchanged.
Can I protect a PDF that is already compressed or merged?
Yes. Password protection can be applied to any standard PDF regardless of how it was created or what other processing it has undergone.
