Frequently asked questions

Does converting between formats reduce quality?
It depends on the conversion direction. Converting JPG to WebP at the same quality setting produces a smaller file with equivalent visual quality — no visible loss. Converting PNG to JPG introduces lossy compression for the first time, which can affect fine edges and text. Converting JPG back to PNG does not restore lost detail — the lossy damage from the original JPG encoding is already done. For the cleanest results, always start from the highest-quality source file available.
Can I convert WebP to JPG?
Yes. Upload your WebP file, select JPG as the output format, and download. This is useful for making WebP images compatible with older applications, Windows Photo Viewer, email attachments, or services that do not yet support WebP. The conversion is instant and runs entirely in your browser.
Does converting PNG to JPG remove transparency?
Yes. JPG does not support an alpha channel (transparency). When you convert a PNG with a transparent background to JPG, the transparent areas become white. If you need to place the image on a colored background, set the background color in an image editor before converting, or use the final page background color as the fill color.
Why is my converted file larger than expected?
This can happen when converting JPG to PNG. PNG uses lossless compression which preserves every pixel, while JPG uses lossy compression. A JPG photograph often stores far less data than the equivalent PNG. If you need a smaller file, keep it as JPG or convert to WebP, which provides better compression than both for photographs.
Is WebP supported by all browsers?
WebP is supported by all major modern browsers: Chrome 23+, Firefox 65+, Safari 14+, and Edge 18+. Global browser support is above 95% as of 2025. The only exceptions are very old browser versions and some older email clients. For websites, WebP is safe to use with a JPG fallback for the rare cases where it is not supported.
Can I convert multiple images at once?
The current tool processes one image at a time. Each conversion is instant, so converting a small set manually takes only seconds. For batch conversion of many files, command-line tools like ImageMagick (free, cross-platform) or the Squoosh CLI are efficient options.
Does conversion change image dimensions?
No. The converter changes only the file format and encoding. The pixel dimensions (width × height) remain exactly the same as the original. If you need to resize as well as convert, use the Image Resizer first and then convert the result.
What is the best format for website images?
WebP is the best format for website images in 2025. It achieves 25–35% smaller files than JPG at equivalent quality and supports transparency like PNG. For browser compatibility, serve WebP to modern browsers and fall back to JPG or PNG for older ones using the HTML element. Most modern CMS platforms including WordPress 5.8+ and Shopify support WebP automatically.
Can I convert an image to GIF?
The current tool supports JPG, PNG, and WebP. GIF conversion is not available because GIF is limited to 256 colors and is mainly used for animations. For static images, PNG or WebP always produces better quality at a similar or smaller file size. For animated GIFs, dedicated tools are needed.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. All conversions run entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image data never leaves your device. This matters especially for sensitive images like personal photos, ID documents, and business assets. There is nothing to trust about a server because there is no server involved.
