Frequently asked questions
What is a cryptographic hash?
A hash function takes any input and produces a fixed-length output. The same input always produces the same hash. It is computationally infeasible to reverse the hash to recover the input or to find two different inputs with the same hash (for secure algorithms).
What is MD5 used for?
MD5 is not secure for passwords or authentication but is still widely used for file integrity checksums, non-security identifiers, and deduplication. Many software downloads provide an MD5 hash to verify the file downloaded correctly.
How do I verify a file with a hash?
Hash the downloaded file and compare it to the hash provided by the source. If they match, the file is intact and was not tampered with in transit.
Can I hash a file instead of text?
The current tool hashes text input. For file hashing, your operating system command line tools (md5sum, sha256sum on Linux and Mac) handle files directly.
Does it work offline?
Yes.
Is SHA-256 good enough for passwords?
SHA-256 without salting is not recommended for password storage. Use bcrypt, Argon2, or PBKDF2 for passwords. SHA-256 is fine for checksums and non-password identifiers.
